I been struggling with my worms trying to escape. I tried putting light over them but after I do several days and put lid on they start trying to get out again. Is there something else I need to do
Welcome Jacob,
If your worms are trying to escape after initial few days being exposed to light, there is definitely an issue in the worm bedding itself.
I can assist you but would require further details. The information that would help me better assist you would be
- type of worms you are raising otherwise assuming red wigglers?
- temperature of worm bedding
- ambient worm tempertaure
- pH level
- moisture level
Besides type of food if utilizing food scraps, are you layering in equal amounts of brown and greens? Do you have a brown layer as the first layer in the worm bin or tray setup?
Let me know and would be happy to assist further!

Thanks for getting back Bruce
Yes i have red wigglers in a tub bin about 1 and a half feet by 2 feet long. I am using layers of food scraps and newspaper. i am growing in my basement about 65 degrees, worm bedding about 100. i am not sure of ph or moister level but started it about 4 weeks now.
Hey Jacob,
Ok first of all you might invest in an inexpensive soil pH, moisture meter in one.
As for temperature of worm bedding this would most likely be the issue as 100 degrees Fahrenheit is to hot. More then likely is still continuing to heat up usually associated with too many greens (vegetable scraps) and not enough browns, shredded newspaper, cardboard...
Try these steps.
- remove a good portion of the greens.
- Mix in dampened shredded newspaper or cardboard (ratio 1:1 of existing pile)
- now move existing leftover bedding to one side of the worm bin (1/3) of bin would be better.
- Cover old worm bedding with a good layer of shredded dampened newspaper
- place new shredded newspaper when wet and piled up a 3"-4" high minimum stacked right up to existng pile.
- DO NOT add any food scraps to the new bedding area.
- Leave cover off and leave under the light.
Any worms trying to escape, simply move to new pile of just shredded paper. If placed right up again old bedding material most worms should try to move to the cooler new bedding area. Once your worms have moved, take a thin layer of old bedding and food scraps and sprinkle over new bedding. Cover with new layer of dampened shredded newspaper or cardboard.
After about 4-5 days if all looks good, go ahead and try covering your worms.
Let me know and can go from there how to further proceed if needed!
